Are You Making These Rookie Social Media Mistakes?

You’ve probably made a few social media mistakes in your life. Small business owners feel the pressure to be connected and jump in with no advice or pros in their corner. Don’t worry. A few rookie mistakes won’t permanently damage your small business’ foray into social media.

The good news is that you can start correcting those mistakes today. Consider when it’s smart to have contract web content professionals backing you up. Many small businesses have a tight budget, but if you do have the budget it’s smart to funnel some funds towards an SEO company who can help you avoid many of these mistakes. Check out these top mistakes to avoid.

Are You Inducing Yawns?

Boring, dull and poorly written content are all common mistakes for the social media newbie. Don’t make your Facebook posts any longer than necessary. Don’t have something interesting or helpful to say? Keep looking for inspiration and don’t settle for mediocre content. It’s slightly better to post nothing than to post something that bores or annoys your audience.

Ideally, you will update your business blog, post on Facebook, and tweet once a day. This requires unique content on each of these platforms. Brainstorm tips related to your business that your audience can actually benefit from. Research recent news related to your company that you can post your opinion about.

Appearance Counts

You will be judged by your photographs. This is especially critical for blogs. Don’t settle for a less-than-stellar photograph to highlight your article. Take the time to find large, high-quality images that really make your followers stop and look. Small, grainy or simply bland photos are easy to find but do nothing to help your social media campaign.

This can take some work. Ensure that you’re following basic photography tips when posting your own products on your blog, Pinterest or web site. However, if you’re using photos found on the web, use your filters. Only search for Google’s large images and spend some time finding the perfect fit.

Be Social on Social Media

Take an interest in your followers and fans. If someone sends you a personal message or comments on a post, respond preferably within the hour. This means you need to have your social media apps on your personal SmartPhone so you know exactly when your customers are reaching out to you. It doesn’t stop there.

Comment on your Facebook friends’ posts and re-tweet interesting things that your Twitter followers send out to the universe. This is how you engage your target audience. Of course, there’s a thin line between showing and interest and barraging your audience. Consider how much personal outreach you’d appreciate from a business.

Use It or Lose It

If you’re going to get into social media, go all in. Don’t start a business account and then never use it. If someone searches for you and finds a dead account, it doesn’t bode well. Keep up with your account, post regularly and commit to your social media presence.
