Google is offering free calling via it’s Gmail service to members of the United States Military. This offer will last through the end of 2011. Troops serving overseas will be able to use Gmail to call friends and family at home for free, provided they have a valid United States Military (.Mil) email address.
Two Steps To Enable Calling From Your Gmail Account
Step 1: Add your .mil address to your Google Account:
- Sign in on the Google Accounts homepage.
- Click Edit next to ‘Email addresses.’
- Add your .mil email in the ‘Add an additional email address’ field.
- Click Save. You will receive an email at your .mil address.
- Open the verification email and click the verification link.
Step 2: Click the ‘Call phone’ link in your chat roster and use the dialpad to make calls. You may be prompted to install the Voice & Video Chat plugin.
Calling through your Gmail account is very similar to Skype and also allows video calling if both parties are enabled. To learn more about this offer from check out the official Gmal Blog.
Google is such a generous company. The U.S military soldiers deserve to have this special offer as they fight for the country and tend to get lonely every time they’re far away from home. Thus, this offer can truly ease the solitary moments of our brave soldiers.
It’s nice to see big companies supporting our military, thanks for the comment!
My words exactly, thanks for the comment!
These soldiers are very lucky to have free call on Gmail good for this year. Anyone could use skype though. I’m very much comfortable with skype.
Skype is a a great option but Skype will charge for the call. It’s not much, but it still adds up, especially if your on a budget
Thanks for the good news! My brother is a U.S military soldier and this is definitely a good news for me. He’s been working for 3 years in the military service and we only communicate twice a month. Surely, the cost of our communication expenses will decrease because of this wonderful offer. I’d like to thank Google for this. Thumbs up!
